Where is Calle Mayor de Alcalá and why is it essential?

The Calle Mayor connects two key points of the historical center: the Cervantes Square and the area of the Santos Niños. It is the axis that articulates much of the life of the city, both today and centuries ago.

What is so special about Alcalá's Calle Mayor: the arcaded street and its history?

The first thing that strikes the eye is that it is a street that is completely arcaded on both sides, something verysomething very unusual in Spain with this level of continuity. The arcades not only protect from the sun or rain, they also tell a story.

If we look up, in some sections we can still see the “peepholes” on the roofs of the “peepholes” in the roofssmall holes that were used to control who was arriving without having to go down to the street. These are details that go unnoticed if we go fast, but that make the walk special.

How to get there and where to start the route

We can start the route from the Cervantes Squareone of the most recognizable points of Alcalá. From there, we just have to enter the Calle Mayor and let ourselves be carried in the direction of the Santos Niños.

It is a very simple route, practically in a straight line, perfect to do it without a map and without haste.

Walking route along the Main Street (step by step itinerary)

The best way to enjoy it is to walk slowly. We recommend a duration of 45 to 75 minutesstopping, looking and entering in the corners that we find.

Stop 1 - The arcades and the medieval "peepholes" on the roof | 8-12 min.

Here the plan is simple: look up and to the sides.

  • Continuous supports on both sides of the street
  • Portico structure unique in Spain
  • Roof peepholes, vestiges of the medieval past

It is a stop to understand what street life was like centuries ago and how it still makes sense today.

Stop 2 - Jewish quarter and "galleries" of communication between houses | 8-10 min.

The Calle Mayor was the main axis of the old Jewish quarter the old Jewish quarter of Alcalá (aljama)which explains its dynamism and structure.

A very curious detail: the upper dwellings could be connected by means of galleries. galleriesThis made it possible to move between houses without going down to the street. It is an element little visible today, but very present in the urban history of the area.

Stop 3 - Casa Natal de Cervantes (Museum) | 15-20 min.

At number 48, we find one of the most important points of the tour: the Birthplace of Miguel de Cervantestoday converted into a museum.

What not to miss:

  • The recreation of a Golden Age house
  • The atmosphere inside the museum
  • The figures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panzaone of the most photographed points

It is an essential stop to understand the connection between Alcalá and literature.

Stop 4 - El Corral de la Sinagoga (Jewish memory in the heart of Main Street) | 10-15 min.

One of the most discreet… and most interesting places.

  • Former location of the synagogue
  • Access through a small parapet
  • A space steeped in history

It is a stop that is not always clearly marked, but it adds a lot of depth to the route.
